Preparing for the tummy tuck:

Proper preparation is important to ensure that your tummy tuck results are satisfactory. There are a few things you can do to prepare yourself before the procedure. One of the most important steps is the consultation. During a consultation for a tummy tuck, you will discuss your goals and concerns with the doctor and together you can come up with an appropriate plan. Some things to keep in mind as you discuss the tummy tuck:

  • Your surgical goals

  • Any prevailing medical conditions you may have

  • Current medications that you are taking, including vitamins or herbal supplements

  • Any previous surgeries

You should have realistic expectations of the procedure. It helps to come prepared with questions about the procedure, such as the following:

  • Am I a good candidate for the procedure?

  • What is the best surgical technique for me?

  • Where and how will the procedure be performed?

  • How can I expect the results to look over time? What about after pregnancy?

  • What will I need to do to ensure that I get the best results?

Leading up to the procedure, you may also have to get a lab test or medical evaluation, stop smoking, adjust current medications, and avoid taking anti-inflammatory or other blood thinning medications, such as aspirin.

How is a tummy tuck performed?

During tummy tuck surgery, the laxity in the abdominal wall is corrected by tightening the muscles of the stomach region. Excess skin and fat is removed via an incision in the low abdominal region or bikini line area. Patients should keep in mind that depending on the extent of excess fat and skin removed, a tummy tuck does produce a visible scar, which may run from hip to hip.

Love handles can be contoured using liposuction at the same time as a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck procedure takes approximately 3-4 hours.

What can I expect after a tummy tuck?

Most tummy tuck patients receive a special long-acting anesthetic that lasts for approximately 3 days, thus minimizing the need for oral pain medication. You can expect to return to work after 7-14 days and return to your normal exercise routine after 6 weeks. It is important to attend all follow-up visits for proper recovery. The duration of the recovery period will vary depending on the specifics of your procedure. You will be instructed on how to properly care for the surgical site, and how to handle drains and care for yourself.

It’s recommended that you have someone with you during the first few days after the procedure. An extra hand around the house will be invaluable for daily activities such as getting around, cooking, and taking care of household chores.
